Frequently Asked Question

New Staff and ClassLink: Logging in for the First Time
Last Updated 2 years ago

We ask that all new staff log into ClassLink to setup Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) during their first login.  Please take the following steps to do so.  The steps will differ slightly depending on whether you are logging into a Chromebook or Windows/Macintosh computer.  Please note that if you do not complete setup of MFA on your account, it will be locked after 2 weeks and you will need to request a password reset.

Chromebooks

  1. Upon starting your Chromebook, you will be presented with the following screen, click the "Next" button in the lower right corner to continue.
  2. At the login screen, enter the username and temporary password that were provided to you by your school's main office or your supervisor. Note that you should not enter your full email address as the username, just the first part (before the @colchesterct.org).
  3. You will be prompted to setup a new password.  Please follow the on-screen instructions for setting your new password.  Please note that if your Chromebook has a smaller screen it may require you to scroll down to see the 'submit' buttons at the bottom.
  4. After successfully updating your password, you will be prompted to setup multi-factor authentication. Please skip to the ClassLink MFA Setup section below for further instructions on this.

Windows (and Mac) Computers

Please note that the specific steps taken on Windows computers are listed here, but the process on Mac computers is very similar.

  1. At the login screen, enter the username and temporary password that were provided to you by your school's main office or your supervisor.  Note that you should not enter your full email address as the username, just the first part (before the @colchesterct.org).
  2. You will be prompted to enter a new password.  One dialog will ask for the "old" (temporary) password, and the next two ask for the new password you wish to use (2nd one to confirm).  Please note the following password requirements:
    1. Password must be 10 characters or longer.
    2. Password must include at least one character from 3 of the four following categories:
      1. Capital letters
      2. Lower case letters
      3. Numbers
      4. Symbols (~!@#$%^&*_-+=`|\(){}[]:;"',.?/)
    3. Password cannot contain numerical sequences (123, 111, etc).
    4. Password cannot contain any part of your username.
    5. Password cannot be any of your recent passwords on this account.
  3. You should get a notification that the password was successfully reset.  Click OK to continue the log in process.

After signing into windows, you will need to log into ClassLink to set up your multi-factor authentication (MFA).  You can achieve this by signing into Google Chrome.  Take the following steps.

  1. Open Google Chrome.  On windows, there should be a shortcut on your desktop.  On Macintosh, you may need to search for it in the launchpad if it is not on the dock.
  2. Chrome should present you with a page asking if you want to sign in to sync.  Click the "Sign In" button.
  3. Enter your full email address when prompted.  This is the same as your username you used to log into Windows/Mac, with @colchesterct.org appended (username@colchesterct.org)
  4. You will be redirected to the ClassLink login page.
  5. Enter the same username and password you entered when you first logged into the Windows/Mac computer.  Do not include the @colchesterct.org in the username.
  6. After your first login, you should be prompted to setup MFA.  Continue to the ClassLink MFA Setup section below to finish setting up your MFA.

ClassLink MFA Setup

Multi-Factory Authentication (MFA) will prompt you to authenticate using an app on your phone, a text message, or to match an image from a list presented to you to verify your login for the first time on any given computer.  Once you successfully log in, you will be asked if you wish to remember the device for up to 30 days before you will need to do MFA again.  This applies to signing in to any of our web-based services that utilize ClassLink (including Google, gmail, drive, docs etc..), as well as the Chromebooks.

  1. At the MFA setup screen, you are given 3 options for MFA.
    1. Option 1 is "Mobile" (mobile authenticator app).  This is the recommended and most secure method for MFA, but if you are not familiar with using a mobile authenticator app, you can use one of the other two methods.
    2. Option 2 is "SMS" (text message).  You can provide a cell phone number that you will receive a text message containing a code you can enter to authenticate.  This is preferred over option 3.
    3. Option 3 is "Image".  This is the least secure method, but if you do not always have access to a phone or device with a mobile authenticator app, you can use this.  You will be provided with a list of images to pick from.  Choose one and remember it.  When prompted for MFA, pick the image that you chose during setup.
