How to Update Windows 10

1. Download Windows Updates
- On a Windows 10 laptop or desktop, sign in using your CPS username and password.
- Open the Windows Start menu, the windows icon in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen.
- In the search bar, type "Update" or "Check for Updates"
- Select the circular arrow icon that appears, saying either "Windows Update Settings" or "Check for Updates". Both will take you to the same screen.
- Once at the Windows Update Settings Screen, you will need to let Windows search for updates. If any updates are available, the screen will say "Updates available, Last Checked on xyz day"
- Click "INSTALL NOW".
- Let Windows download the updates. This may take a few minutes, or a few hours.
2. Install Updates and Restart
- Once Windows says updates have been downloaded, the PC must be restarted to complete the installation. At the Windows Update Settings you will now see "Restart and Install" , or "Schedule the Restart".
- Please restart the PC when you are done using it for the day, so that it has time to complete the process, which make take up to an hour.
- If your PC is up to date, the Update screen will say "You're up to Date" and look as below:
3. Installing Optional Updates (Firmware & Device Drivers)
- Finally, once the PC has restarted, return to the Windows Update Settings screen. If you see blue text saying "View optional updates", click on it.
- You should check all the items on the list that appears, and click Download and Install.
- You must restart your PC when it is convenient for you, and those updates will go into effect.
**Note** - Installing "Optional Updates" can often solve issues related to connecting to Printers, microphones and cameras, and external displays. If you are having an issue with a connected device, make sure everything is updated there!
